In our fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in the pursuit of our dreams, goals, and desires. Whether it's career success, financial stability, relationships, or personal achievements, we often focus intensely on what we want to achieve. But the Bible offers a powerful reminder in Matthew 6:33 that helps us realign our priorities: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
This verse isn't just about faith—it's about the order in which we prioritize our lives. To understand this better, we can visualize this concept using the shape of a triangle. Let’s break down the "Triangle Command" and see how this simple yet profound illustration can guide us in our daily lives.
Imagine a triangle, with three key elements that help us understand our relationship with God and our pursuit of life’s goals:
1. The Left Side of the Triangle: Man
- On the left side of the triangle, we have Man—you and me. This represents our human nature, our desires, and the goals we set in life. It’s where we begin. Whether it’s dreams for success, happiness, relationships, or achievements, this is where all of our aspirations start.
- However, as we all know, pursuing these desires in isolation can leave us feeling empty or unfulfilled. The left side is the beginning of the journey, but it’s not the end. The line extending from this point symbolizes our striving and our human efforts to attain the things we want in life.
2. The Right Side of the Triangle: Our Goals, Aspirations, and Desires
- On the right side of the triangle, we have our goals, aspirations, and desires. These are the things we work for—the things we often get fixated on in our daily lives. Whether it’s career success, financial independence, a happy family, or personal growth, this line represents our pursuit of everything we think will bring us happiness or fulfillment.
- The challenge here is that, often, these goals can feel unattainable or elusive. No matter how hard we try, we may sometimes feel like we’re chasing after something that’s always just out of reach. This is where the triangle’s upward line comes into play.
3. The Top of the Triangle: God
- At the top of the triangle, we have God—the ultimate source of everything we need. The line that goes upward represents our relationship with God. In the Bible, we are told that seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness is the first priority, above all else.
- By placing God at the top, we acknowledge that He is the ultimate provider and guide. When we align ourselves with His will, our desires and pursuits find their true purpose. The upward direction symbolizes the connection and submission to God’s will, which, according to Matthew 6:33, is the key to everything else falling into place.
To better understand how seeking God first works, let’s add another illustration: the reservoir. In many places, water is stored in reservoirs positioned high above the ground. This elevated position creates pressure that forces the water to flow downward, reaching all the intended destinations—homes, farms, and cities—where it’s needed most.
In the same way, God, being high above us, has the ultimate advantage to provide for us. Just as the elevated reservoir allows water to flow with pressure and purpose, God's high position—His sovereign authority and infinite power—allows Him to provide for our needs when we seek Him first. He can supply all that we need because He is the Almighty, with the ability to give us everything we require for life and godliness.
However, just as water must flow from the reservoir, we must position ourselves in a way that allows God's provision to reach us. That positioning is seeking God first. If we place God at the top of our lives, as represented by the upward line in our triangle, we open the way for His abundant provision to flow into every other area of our lives—just as water flows effortlessly from a high platform to its destination.
Now, let's bring this all together. Picture yourself at the bottom left of the triangle, striving toward your goals and desires. These are important—God created us with dreams and the ability to achieve great things. However, the key to fulfillment isn’t simply in achieving these goals on our own. The triangle shows us that our efforts must be anchored in our relationship with God.
As you move upward in the triangle—seeking God first—He becomes the center and the ultimate guide. The closer you get to God (symbolized by the upward line), the more your desires and goals are aligned with His will. This alignment brings peace, purpose, and fulfillment. The downward part of the triangle (the right side) will then naturally fall into place. As Matthew 6:33 promises, “all these things shall be added unto you.”
When we seek God’s kingdom and righteousness first, our goals and desires are no longer empty or self-centered. They become part of a larger purpose. When our focus is on God, He works in us to make our desires align with His perfect plan for our lives. Everything we need—whether it’s success, peace, joy, or provision—flows from that relationship.
Our main points of discussion here;
1. Prioritize God First: The triangle’s upward line reminds us that God must be our first priority. Everything else—our goals, relationships, and desires—will follow when we place God at the center of our lives.
2. God Aligns Our Desires: The line from the left to the right symbolizes our goals, but they are best fulfilled when we align them with God’s will. Seeking God first helps us refine our desires to fit His perfect plan.
3. Peace in Alignment: When we put God first, we experience a peace that transcends the temporary highs and lows of pursuing our own goals. We trust that God knows what’s best for us and that He will provide everything we need.
4. The Promise of Provision: As we follow the "Triangle Command" and seek God first, we can be confident that all other things will be added to us in the right way, at the right time. God’s provision is a promise tied to our priority of seeking His kingdom.
5. The High Reservoir Advantage: Just as a reservoir’s high position allows water to flow with pressure to its destination, God’s high position as the Almighty allows Him to provide abundantly for us when we seek Him first. His provision flows into every area of our lives when we align ourselves with Him.
The Triangle Command isn't just a spiritual principle—it’s a practical guide for daily living. By placing God at the top of our lives and aligning our aspirations with His will, we unlock the fullness of life that He promises. Seeking God first isn’t just a command; it’s a key to living a life of peace, purpose, and provision.
So, the next time you’re caught up in the pursuit of your goals, remember the triangle. In the process of achieving your own goals, seek first how the glory of God will be established in that goal execution, and watch as everything else falls into place.
Mercy to you and peace
