You’re Watching More Than You Think

"I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me." — Psalm 101:3 (KJV)

Many people think they’re just watching videos, but the truth is, you’re taking in more than you realize. Recently, the Spirit of God impressed it on my heart that when we focus on any video content—whether online or offline—we’re not only engaging with what’s on the screen, Our whole being—body, soul, and spirit—is connecting with what we’re watching. It's deeper than entertainment; it’s alignment. And most times, we’re not even aware of the invisible transactions going on in those moments.

Many think that watching videos is a passive act, a harmless escape. But in truth, you’re watching more than you think — and more than that, more is watching you back.

Focus Is a Gateway: More Than Sight Is Involved

In psychology, attention is not just the act of seeing — it’s the process of giving mental, emotional, and neurological priority to a stimulus. Dr. Daniel Goleman, the author of Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence, writes that “what we focus on actually wires our brain.” The longer we focus, the deeper the impression.

Now consider that in light of 1 Corinthians 6:12 —

"All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient... I will not be brought under the power of any."

The things we give our attention to — especially for long periods — begin to shape us. They build neural pathways, affect our decisions, and ultimately influence who we are becoming. That’s why you may notice how a seemingly harmless 10-minute video can alter your mood, your thoughts, or even your cravings.

Why? Because as human beings, we are body, soul, and spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:23). And when we focus, we open up all three layers of our being to receive — not just from what we see, but from what we behold.

The Spiritual Mechanics of Watching

The principle is simple yet profound: What you give your time to, you give your heart to.

"Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." — Matthew 6:21 (KJV)

We are wired for connection. And connection happens by focus + time. Every time you spend an hour on a video, a show, or a reel, you’re telling your entire being: “This is important — adapt to it.”

And guess what? Your being obeys.

That’s how addictions form. That’s how habits are carved. That’s how your spiritual and emotional boundaries begin to weaken or strengthen — based on what you give repeated attention to.

When you stare long enough at anything, it begins to stare back — shaping your identity, mood, and spiritual atmosphere.

The Influence Beneath the Surface

Dr. Caroline Leaf, a cognitive neuroscientist and believer, states in her research that “we think we’re only observing, but our non-conscious mind is always taking in details.” That means even when your eyes miss certain things — your soul doesn’t.

No wonder David, a man after God’s own heart, prayed:

"Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way." — Psalm 119:37 (KJV)

David understood that seeing wasn’t neutral. It had consequences. There is a spiritual transfer, even when you’re unaware — because the spirit realm responds to the gateways of your soul. And your eyes are a major gate.

"The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light." — Matthew 6:22 (KJV)

If your eyes are locked on what is empty, lustful, violent, or godless — it won’t just sit in your memory, it will settle in your spirit.

Beholding and Becoming

The Bible shows us that what we behold, we become.

"But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image..." — 2 Corinthians 3:18 (KJV)

Now flip that: if we behold the world constantly, what will we become? We will become like the world. This is why Paul said:

"Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind..." — Romans 12:2 (KJV)

How can the mind be renewed if it's constantly being fed with unfiltered and ungodly visual content?

The Call to Intentional Watching

Watching is never neutral. Whether through music videos, skits, movies, or YouTube content — you are being formed.

This is not a call to paranoia, but a call to discernment.

"Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil." — 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 (KJV)

Every time you reach for your phone or turn on your TV, ask:

  • What is this content feeding in me?

  • Is it awakening godly desires or distracting me from God's voice?

  • Is this entertainment pulling me away from intimacy with God?

Train Your Eyes to Watch Wisely

There is more happening when you watch than what you can see. You’re feeding more than your eyes — you’re feeding your soul and spirit. The devil is cunning and subtle — he doesn’t need to knock at your door when he knows your focus will open it.

"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." — Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)

In these days of content overload, train your heart to watch wisely, and feed your soul only what aligns with the Spirit of God and the truth of Scripture.

Let your screen time become soul time — intentionally feeding your being with what glorifies God.
