2. Prayer as Submission — The Surrender of the Will to God’s Sovereignty The next key phrase Jesus taught was, “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10, KJV) This reveals the second layer of true prayer — submission. Prayer is not manipulation of God’s power; it is alignment with His purpose. It is not about bending God to our will, but bending our will to God’s. Every genuine prayer leaves a mark of humility and brokenness on the one who prays. If after prayer, pride rises — it was not prayer but performance. When Isaiah encountered the divine presence, he exclaimed: Isaiah 6:5 (KJV) “Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips…” Notice: He was a prophet, yet in the presence of God, his first reaction was humility, not self-exaltation. Similarly, in Gethsemane, Jesus demonstrated the perfect model of prayer as submission: Luke 22:42 (KJV) “Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” In true prayer, we are transformed — our will melts into His will. The longer we stay, the more self dies and Christ lives.
